Hi everyone! Today we finish up Book 4 with part 18. Stay tuned for Book 5 coming soon!
Mike sat in his cell and stared at the RAIFs that stood guard outside it. Over the last few weeks, the routine had been the same every day; various talking heads would come and question him, keep an eye on him, then the gas would come. When he came to he could tell that his captors had been performing medical tests on him, he didn’t know why but he knew it was happening and he didn’t like it at all. He was used to prisons but this one was different, he had never been treated so well and yet so much like a lab rat at the same time.
There were positive experiences here to, for one the food was phenomenal. He had plenty of visitors. He had given his robot overlords the names of Moe and Curly which he was pretty sure they hated, and that made it enjoyable. Most importantly, every other day Brianna was assigned to keep an eye on him, which was worth the mystery medical testing all on its own.
Mike had no idea what she saw in him, but the look in Briiana’s eyes when she looked at him could never hide the fact that she saw something she wanted and the feeling was mutual. Mike had never met a woman like her before probably because women like her didn’t split time between the prison system and the back alleys of New York City. She was the perfect combination of intelligence, beauty, kindness, and anger. Mike remembered sparring with her at the Black Market and had admired the lethal underpinnings of her otherwise girl next store appearance, a paradox that he hadn’t stopped thinking about.
He had never afforded himself the time to worry about women. He had a mission to achieve and finding and killing his father’s murderer was all consuming. It had been that way for years, and he had no idea that sitting in a cell with nothing to do would change his focus so dramatically.
Briiana entered the room and sat down in front of his cell a small scar over her left eye.
“What happened Bri? Are you okay? Let me out of here, and I will kill the bastard that did that to you!” Mike put his hand up to the wall of the cell and pressed his palm against it.
Briiana pressed her palm against the glass and smiled, “It’s nothing Mike. We have been training to fight things we cannot see, I obviously need more training.”
Her smile had a power over Mike that he had never succumbed to before. Feelings of warmth and hope seemed to slowly chip away at his usual emotions of despair and rage every time he saw it.
Briiana stared at Mike’s calloused hand that dwarfed hers and wondered what it would be like to feel his skin on hers for a few moments before she brought herself out of her daydream and once again looked into his piercing blue eyes. “Listen, I have come to relay a message to you, and I am not sure I want to.”
Mike looked deeply into her eyes then backed away from the glass and sat on his cot, “Okay B. Let me have it. What’s going on? About the only thing that could be worse than what my life is now is if they stopped letting you come see me. Tell me that’s not the case.”
Briiana started to tell Mike about the plan that Mr. Smith and the other Champions had devised and the purpose behind the medical testing that Mike had been subjected to. “After you told us all that you knew about The Professor and his group we wanted to know what he did to you to control you. After isolating an anomaly in your DNA, we tried to repair it to what it should be, but we failed. Whatever he did to you altered your DNA permanently, and that means that he could possibly be able to control you at his whim for the rest of your life. I’m sorry Mike we tried, and it scares the hell out of me that you are not in total control of your mind.” Briiana’s eyes filled with water and she struggled to hold back the tears that had flowed freely the day before when she was informed of the situation.
“It’s okay B. I probably deserved this. I am not a good man. You know that. I am definitely not good enough for you….although I wish I were, you make me feel that there is more to my life than just revenge. It is probably better this way.” Mike trailed off, and a silence filled the room as they stared at each other wondering what may have been.
“We failed to reverse it” Briiana continued, “but we did find a way to minimize the effects. Once we isolated the specific sequence that allows The Professor to send you his instructions and realized it was irreversible, we tried a different approach. The scientists here designed a nanobot that feeds on the specific DNA strand and injected you with it in the hope that any further instructions would be cut off before they reached your cerebellum. I am here to see if it is a successful fix. You told us that your last directive was to kill the people in the blue suits, to kill me so that directive is still in your system if the nanobot did its job that directive should have disappeared.”
“So what now B?” Mike asked.
“This” Mike was filled with fear as Briiana opened the door to his cell and stepped in. The RAIFs sprung to attention and entered the cell along with her.
Briiana reached down and grabbed Mike’s hand and placed it in the middle of her chest, “Unzip my sweater.”
Mike fought off the confusion and began to unzip Briiana’s sweater only to reveal her blue Champions suit. He looked down at the tight-fitting suit and then looked up into Briiana’s fear filled eyes.
As Briiana stood petrified and the RAIFs edged closer Mike pulled Briiana into him and kissed her with a passion that neither of them had ever experienced.
As they separated Brianna put her hand to his cheek and whispered, “Now go get rid of your baggage. I don’t want to know about anything. After that, we will see where this goes.” She kissed him again and left the room with the RAIFs following her out.
Mike was free but what the freedom meant was utterly unclear to him. He walked out of his cell and into the night.
