2017 is almost over and I am absolutely ready! This year was a nice one, but I think 2018 is going to be a great one.

Any of you do New Year’s Resolutions?

I’ve never been all that into “New Year” resolutions but I do like resolutions ever so often at random times. “Play more games” doesn’t sound like a bad resolution for this new year! Doing it for free is even better. Which is why I love my blogs that are all about completely free games. Today I’m sharing the games you get for free for the new month with Xbox Gold and PlayStation Plus.

Before I dive into that. Let me remind you Saljack Enterprise’s month-long competition for the Amazon eGiftcard is still going on until January 11th. I’ll announce the winner January 12th. Check out the details on how to enter here. What would you do with $150 to Amazon? Oh my gosh, it’s too hard to choose with $150 in options so let’s get to the free games.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing — January 1-31 for XONE

1

IMAGE FROM STEAM

This action role-playing game came out in 2013 originally. This book is based on the book Dracula by Bram Stoker. However, this story focuses on the son of the Van Helsing you are probably thinking of. The main character of this video game is the son of Abraham Van Helsing, the vampire hunter from the book. The ratings are pretty high on Steam, with a 910, though have been somewhat mixed over the years on Metacritic.

Correction: This one is the 3rd in the Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing released in 2015. Shoutout to lbcreative1505 for pointing this out to us.

Zombi — January 16 – February 15 for XONE

2

IMAGE FROM UBISOFT

This is a first-person survival horror video game. It was originally released in 2012 and was one of the launch games for the Wii U. It has permadeath, which is always always a nerve-wracking yet exciting feature. IGN gave the Xbox version a 7.5 out of 10. Not too shabby. The game overall received some positive praise, however, was never financially successful.

Tomb Raider: Underworld — January 1-15 for 360

3

IMAGE FROM STEAM

This is the eight game in the action-adventure Tomb Raider franchise. It is a direct sequel to Tomb Raider: Legend. There was a lot of upgrades for this game including a dual target feature, upgraded inventory system, using Active Sonar map, and the grappling hook. The game received positive reviews for the Xbox despite complaints that the PlayStation version was obviously not as good–as if it was a watered down version with worse graphics. Metacritic has given the Xbox version a 76 out of 100.

Army of Two — January 16-31 for 360

4

IMAGE FROM EA

This third-person shooter first released way back in 2008. This game is all about teamwork. It’s absolutely necessary to be coordinated with your partner in this game in order to progress. Though that might make you think that this is only a multiplayer game it can be played with an AI partner. Which sometimes makes it so you lean back and depend on this AI in order to get through missions. Hmm. Gamespot gave it a 6.5 out of 10 and Metacritic gave the Xbox version a 72%.

Starblood Arena – January 2 through March 6 for PS4 VR

5

IMAGE FROM PLAYSTATION

This is the first free VR game of the new year (for PlayStation) and will remain free from January 2nd until March 6th. I wonder if that means we won’t get a new free VR option in February. This is a flying mech shooter game just released in 2017. In this single or multiplayer game, you move all around to avoid getting shot while your arena battles are broadcast to the universe. It has a 68% on Metacritic.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided for PS4

6

IMAGE FROM STEAM

This is an action role-playing stealth game that released August of 2016. The story takes place in 20229, in a cyberpunk dystopian future. The game combines first-person shooter gameplay with a role-playing upgrade system. When completing tasks you have the option of using stealth, hacking, combat, or social interaction. Sounds pretty fun and the reviews are good too. Metacritic has the PS4 version ranked at 84/100.

Batman: The Telltale Series for PS4

7

IMAGE FROM STEAM

The second PS4 game is an episodic point and click adventure that was originally released in 2016. This game has a sequel that was released this year (2017), called Batman: The Enemy Within. In this game, you get to play almost equally as Batman and Bruce Wayne. The reviews were a little mixed, the big complaint being Troy Baker’s performance as Batman. It has a 68% on Metacritic.

Sacred 3 for PS3

8

IMAGE FROM STEAM

This is a hack and slash brawler that was originally released in 2014. This game is a four-player co-op either online with people or offline with AI. There are many classes to choose from, active and passive skills, as well as abilities that can be equipped. The game has majorly mixed reviews with a 51/100 on Metacritic. It is apparently a disappointment to fans of the series and fails to be an entertaining game to some.

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 for PS3

9

IMAGE FROM STEAM

This is a comedy, point and click adventure game that came out in 2015. In this game, a magical force is turning beasts into puppies and castles into dollhouses. Sounds like a game where I’d be rooting for the “villain”. The game has positive reviews though on Metacritic the PlayStation version has a lower rating than the others, with a 63/100.

Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness for PS Vita (Cross-Buy with PS4)

10

IMAGE FROM PLAYSTATION

Ahh, Psych-Pass. I love this anime purely because of the name. Not that the actual watching part was bad, but still, that name is golden. Anyway, this is a visual novel game that originally came out in 2015, although didn’t see a North American release until the following year. This game is all about the anime, in which the players live in a dystopian future world where you can be jailed for committing any crimes. Instead, you are judged on your potential to commit crimes, haha. The game has positive reviews with a 72% on Metacritic.

Uncanny Valley for PS Vita (Cross-Buy with PS4)

11

IMAGE FROM PLAYSTATION BLOG

This is a story-driven survival horror game. This is one of those games where the choices you make affect the outcome of the game. Doesn’t sound too bad but the reviews are not great. Metacritic has it at a 52% with reviewers saying it’s mediocre and sometimes feels tedious to play.

  1. Hi there, nice list, very informative. You did however get the first Xbox one one wrong, it isn’t the one released in 2013 but is the third in the incredible adventures of van helsing released in 2015. Hope this helps.

    1. Hi and thank you for the correction!

      1. I’m happy I could help.

A good start for 2018 I would say. Now I have something to look forward to. As a gamer it is gonna be fun.

  4. Psycho Pass is getting a game? Oh boy I need to rewatch the anime and manga to just refresh my memory of it.

  5. roberachi says:

Thanks Lilo Nice article as we finish the year. It will really be a great way to start the coming year am really very anxious for the release especially Deus EX having finished the other one can’t wait for this one. Happy New Year.

  6. numberpardox says:

I want to play Army for two but, i still need to wait 2 weeks 🙁 Well, I know it’s worth the wait so, I’ll just continue waiting until January 16.

  7. Start the new year right, play more video games! Hahaha I don’t know if this is right but, playing games is surely fun 🙂

  8. Edwin Kamau says:

I don’t know what to say. This is massive and considering maybe you have resolution of playing more, this is for you.

  9. David Kamau says:

Tomb Raider is one of my favorite series of games. I once played it the whole night only to realise it was 6 in the morning and not in the evening.
    I know gamers understand this.

  10. Abby says:

I’ve been a fan of Tomb Raider; both the movie and the games. I am very excited to try their new offering!

  11. My New Year’s resolution for 2018 is to not get too distracted with my gaming. I got a few games last week and that’s all I’ve been doing. Granted that it’s the holidays- I still need to remember to balance work and my school with gaming. 🙂

  12. kaka135 says:

I wish I can have the new year resolution as “Play More Games”, but being a stay at home mom with three young kids, this can’t happen to me at least in year 2018 or near future. I used to have new year resolution, but I have changed to pick a word or two for the year for myself, and I picked “Focus” and “Be Present” for 2018.

Though I don’t think I will be playing much games, I am happy to read about it from this blog. Wish the new year will be a great year for everyone here!

  13. Chatingale says:

A great way to start the year with fun and cool games. The good news is that they are free!

  14. mchesk16 says:

A lot of these games seem to take place in the future. I think Army of Two looks pretty hardcore even though it didn’t get great reviews.
