Lilo's Lair #79: 2017 Golden Joystick Awards Winners. Presented by Saljack Enterprises. Gaming. Animation. Media. Entertainment. Woman Owned.

The Golden Joystick Awards have been announced! These awards are the second oldest video game awards (the first is Arcade Awards) and can be voted on by anyone online. The Golden Joystick Awards are also called the People’s Gaming Awards and this year marked the 35th annual. I’ve got the list for you guys.

This is perfect timing for it to come out so that you can put some of these games on your Christmas wishlist. It might also make you want to put a new gaming system on your list–*cough cough* Nintendo Switch. That’s because of which game made “Ultimate Game of the Year.” Hmm…

I’m going to offer a little bit of information about some of the winners, but some categories speak for themselves. One game you’ll notice is missing from this list is Mario Odyssey, and I think that is because it came out so close to these awards. Luckily Mario Odyssey picked up a few winning spots on the Game Critics Awards. Particularly, Best action-adventure game, best console game, and Best of Show.

Best StorytellingHorizon Zero Dawn

1

IMAGE FROM PLAYSTATION

This is an action role-playing game only out for PS4. The setting is a post-apocalyptic world overrun with robots. You play as Aloy, a hunter, and archer. The storyline is intense and exciting. It’s about tribal communities, cults, and personal mysteries.

Best Visual Design – Cuphead

2

IMAGE FROM POLYGON

The best visual design is Cuphead! Are you surprised? I guess in an age where almost life-like graphics in games are becoming commonplace, what you need to stick out is crisp nostalgia. The graphics are simple but pleasing. They follow a robust overall theme for the entire game over all aspects and pay tribute to a classic time in cartoons that is missing today.

Best Audio – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda series is known for having great soundtracks throughout every game. That is why it’s no big surprise this one took the best audio spot this year. Go ahead and take a listen to that YouTube video I linked (heh heh). It’s relaxing, it’s inspiring, it’s overall a great listen and perfect for background music that moves your emotions but isn’t too distracting.

Best Gaming Performance sponsored by The Sun AND Breakthrough Award sponsored by Badfly – Ashly Burch (Horizon Zero Dawn)

3

IMAGE FROM SONY/GETTYIMAGES

Ashly Burch is the voice behind Aloy, the main character in Horizon Zero Dawn. It makes a lot of sense her performance would garner an award when the game is voted best narrative. Hard to win the best narrative without great voice acting! She also voiced Tiny Tina in Borderlands 2 and Sasha Braus in Attack on Titan. Another cool thing about her is she was a story writer for Adventure Time! I’m totally girl crushing right now.

Best Streamer / Broadcaster – Markiplier

4

IMAGE FROM CELEBSGONEGOOD

With over 7 billion views and 18 million subscribers, Markiplier is the 25th most subscribed channel on YouTube. He does Let’s Play videos with much enthusiasm and sensationalism. Apparently, a fun watch.

Outstanding Contribution to the UK Games Industry sponsored by The Telegraph – Debbie Bestwick MBE

Debbie Bestwick is in charge of the commercial and legal aspects of Team17. Team17 is a UK based video game developing company. They do games such as Worms and Alien Breed. I recently talked about one of their games in a blog about co-op games for non-gamer friends–the game Overcooked.

Best Indie Game in collaboration with Square Enix Collective – Friday the 13th: The Game

5

IMAGE FROM GAMEZONE

I’m a little surprised to see this game on the list. I checked this game out when it first launched, and it was having some serious issues! However, they seemed to have fixed those issues, and the game bounced back in the reviews. This is a survival horror for PC, PS4, and XONE.

Best Multiplayer Game sponsored by GT Omega – PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

6
IMAGE FROM HUMBLE

Being a game still in Early Access hasn’t held this game back in popularity. It’s one of the top games on Twitch for streamers. This is a battle royale online multiplayer game. Battle Royale is a combo of exploration, survival, and scavenging. The gameplay is a massive last man standing deathmatch.

Studio of the Year – Nintendo EPD

What more needs to be said? Nintendo has had a significant year with the Switch.

Best VR Game – Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

7

IMAGE FROM WCCFTECH

This is one of the first AAA/blockbuster games that has come out for VR. It’s also a perfect game for VR considering the fright factor. There are some differences between playing VR and not. The visuals are compromised a little, but overall this is a great leap forward for VR regarding game choice.

eSports Play of the Year sponsored by Intel – Agilities

eSports Team of the Year – Seoul Dynasty (formerly Lunatic-Hai)

South Korea won the Overwatch World Championship this year.

eSports Game of the Year sponsored by OMEN by HP – Overwatch

Handheld / Mobile Game of the Year sponsored by Bespoke Arcades – Pokémon Sun and Moon

Nintendo Game of the Year – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

PlayStation Game of the Year – Horizon Zero Dawn

Xbox Game of the Year – Cuphead

PC Game of the Year – PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

Critics’ Choice Award – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Hall of Fame – Final Fantasy

Most Wanted Award – The Last of Us Part II

8

IMAGE FROM PLAYSTATION

This is an upcoming action-adventure survival game for the PlayStation 4. It is a sequel to the 2013 game The Last of Us. It’s considered one of the most anticipated games of 2018.

Still Playing Award – World of Tanks

9

IMAGE FROM LIFEWIRE

This is a free to play MMO. Which does mean there are in-game purchases. The game is a simple set up, where you control a single tank. You are on a team that faces off against another team. The game is won when the other team’s tanks are destroyed or by capturing their base.

Lifetime Achievement – Sid Meier

I’m pretty excited to see this since I’m a long time fan of the Civilization series.

Ultimate Game of the Year – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Legen of Zelda: Breath of Wild has beat out every other game for the Golden Joystick Awards. Makes me a little salty that it’s only available on the Switch.

The list is amazing with great graphic category, best audio, but i just have to watch Best Gaming Performance sponsored by The Sun AND Breakthrough Award sponsored by Badfly – Ashly Burch (Horizon Zero Dawn). Nothing beats a good game with a great narrative.

  2. I would never play the VR game of Biohazard. Geez….. I can’t. It’ll freak the shit out of me which is why it made it to this list.

  3. Resident Evil in full VR bonanza? Who doesn’t want that? I don’t mind getting a mini heart attack playing that game in the middle of the night!

I have been playing the resident evil series since god knows when so this is a big thumbs up!

  4. I’m actually not surprise that World Of Tanks is still racking awards up until today. Its a very hardcore game meant to cater to the trigger happy tank nerds an nutjobs alike! What a time to be alive! Woot woot.

  5. I laughed to “Still Playing Award” because it feels to have double meaning. Well, World of tanks is a classic and a must try tank game.

  6. Resident Evil in VR? No way I’ll try that. I already have goosebumps while playing it on PC, what more on VR? I don’t think I can survive that.

Sweet list. Do they televise these awards? If not they should and make it a big event like the Oscars or the Junos. Thanks for the read.

A few weeks back Nash reviewed CUPHEAD. Seeing it up there getting recognition must be very satisfying. My friend plays this game currently and is persuading me to do so.

Whoa am I seeing double? I mean that girl looks exactly alike without even trying whatsoever. Aside from the hair everything else is perfect.

  10. Loving the line up, just wish there was more Persona 5 (maybe in best RPG i don’t know). Also what about Nier: Automata, Persona 5 and Cuphead for best soundtrack? I freaking love Persona 5’s soundtrack so much too (Shoji Meguro is amazing with his music honestly).

Seeing Zelda up there does not surprise me, If anything what is surprising is why did it take the developers long time for a new game?

Congratulations to the winners. I’m surprised Cuphead won best visual design as well since you are right– most games feature as close to real-life graphics as possible!

That was indeed surprising a weird choice for VISUAL Design I admit, My choice would have been Zero Dawn but perhaps the judges saw something that I do not.

Hall of famer : Final Fantasy! Yaaayyyy!!!! Still on Baby! Sorry, coz I think that’s the only game I really happen to know by heart. Oh, and I so happen to know Resident Evil as well, but I’m such a scaredy cat and I really don’t like watching my character die because of Zombie Apocalypse… But this awards and winners are actually great, I can go and check a few of these games one of these days.
