Another week and this weekend was a bog convention: The Blizzcon 2017! This is a video game convention held by Blizzard. That is the company responsible for Overwatch, Hearthstone, Starcraft, and etc. Since 2005 it has been held in Anaheim, California and the convention center there. This event is known to bring announcements for games new and old, cosplay contests, concerts, and more. This year it was held November 3rd and 4th. The convention center was expanded, so they got to sell more tickets this year! Also, the ending concert was Muse.
Now that you’ve got the rundown I want to share with you all the significant gaming news that came from this event! It’s an exciting time for Blizzard games so get ready.
Let’s start with Overwatch. First, there is a new animated short! It is titled “Honor and Glory” and features Reinhardt. It’s an emotional one, make sure no one is cutting onions nearby or you might just shed a little tear or two.
There is also a new map for Overwatch. It’s a Blizzard theme park with areas that are all about other games from Blizzard, like War of Warcraft.
Okay, I’m going to stop saving the biggest juicy tidbit. There is a new hero! Her name is Moira, and she is also being released with a few alternative skins. This is the 26th playable character for the game. She is some type of magic user who can deal massive damage, but also heal teammates. Moira is also a geneticist who works for Talon. She will be first released in the public test region on PC before officially coming out in the game.
The fun doesn’t stop there for Overwatch though. There are a collection of new skins coming out that are based on other Blizzard games like Diablo.

Finally, are you interested in who won the Overwatch World Cup? It was South Korea, Canada came in second.
- Hearthstone Inn-vitational: Team Grimestreet Grifters
- Starcraft Remastered Ultimate Title Fight: Kim “Bisu” Taek Yong
- World of Warcraft Arena World Championship: ABC
- Heroes of the Storm Global Championship Finals: MVP Black
- StarCraft II World Championship Series Global Finals: Lee ‘Rogue’ Byung Ryul
Now, on to Hearthstone! There is a new expansion pack coming out. This expansion includes a free single-player mode. Free, music to my ears. This mode is called Dungeon Run. In this mode, you play against 8 random bosses out of the 48 possible bosses. You start the game with ten cards. After defeating a boss, you’ll receive a loot pile including three more cards. If you lose, you start over. Now, this is an entirely separate thing from your regular cards. You do not need to own any cards to play, so yes its really free. The cards you get in Dungeon crawl stay in Dungeon Crawl.
All the cards for this new expansion were also revealed. By the way, the expansion itself is called Kobolds & Catacombs. There are fourteen cards, check them out here.
Next game with news from Blizzcon is Heroes of the Storm. Two new heroes are coming to the game. They are Hanzo from Overwatch and Alexstrasza from Warcraft. These are both considered range combat style characters. Hanzo being a ranged assassin and also a scout, while Alexstrasza who can heal allies and turn into a dragon.
There will also be some significant updates to the game. The update will focus on refinements of the actual playing. Things like performance improvements and reworking stealth functions.
Some other big news is for StarCraft II. It’s going free-to-play! This very month you will be able to play the Wings of Liberty campaign and co-op mode for free. Starcraft II has a reliable and robust player base, but this will probably bring in a lot of fresh blood!
Now, finally, the last game with news is World of Warcraft. Coming out is World of Warcraft Classic. This lets people play without the expansions. There aren’t many details beyond that except they don’t plan to include the launch problems players had from the original game–haha.
The new expansion was also revealed for WoW. It is titled “Battle of Azeroth.” There will be a new level cap of 120 and lots of new land. Two new continents Kul Tiras and Zandalar. There are also going to be several new islands. There will be a series of new dungeon raids as well. A lot is going on in this new expansion, and the people working on it called it their most ambitious expansion yet. Not only is there everything I already mentioned but more, but more elements being added. One of those is called Island Expeditions. This is for three players to cooperatively take on tasks on an island. You compete against another team (either AI or real players) to complete your tasks first. There will also be new Allied Races.
That is all as for game updates from Blizzcon! Now, 35,000 people attended the event this year! Which makes for good competition at the event. They run several competitions from cosplay, to fan art, to talent, and finally movies. Let me show you the winners.
Costume Winner was Laura Mercer as Hogger.
