Hello, hello everyone! Ready for November? Whatever that means. It’s not like November is going to reach back and smack you across the face. Anyway, the year is almost over now (well two more months), so I thought it would be a great time to reflect on some of the best games of this year. Specifically, I wanted to talk about mobile games because it’s been a while since I have! I need a new mobile game, I’ve been reading manga on my phone and want to switch it up. I actually just got a new phone! Well, a replacement phone since I broke my last one….again. A group of friends in middle school used to call me butterfingers in home economics class. Humph, I don’t think I’m clumsy! I’m just better suited for more intense things like gaming or sports. Walking around mindlessly while holding a phone is not my forte. I usually break a phone once every 6-8 months–gah! I blame it on concrete floors. Home Depot has been the killer of at least two of my phones.
Anyway! I’m on a mobile game dry spell and need a really good one. That’s why I’ve done some proper research to find the top eight games of 2017 that caught my eye! I have decided not to limit myself to free games this time. Though I have made sure to include an excellent variety of different genres to make a nice rounded list. This is far from every awesome game that came out this year, but these for sure are highly rated and look great. Here it is:
1. Planescape: Torment
Genre: Role-playing game
Price: $9.99 iOS&Android/ $19.99 Computer
This game is not new. It came out back in 1999 if anyone can remember that far back. Rega less, this is an amazing Dungeon and Dragons inspired game that received amazing reviews. It did well enough that they haven’t given up yet and came out with an enhanced edition for iOs, Android, Mac, Linux, and Windows. If you guys like Baldur’s Gate or Divinity Original Sin 2 than this is the game for you. Planescape: Torment is primarily story driven and the game rules are based on the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition.
2. Monument Valley 2 and Layton’s Mystery Journey
Price: $4.99 iOS
Two puzzle games because I couldn’t help myself! First up is Monument Valley 2, which is currently only available on iOS. However, it’s coming to Android phones November 6th! That’s next week, woohoo! This game plays heavily on optical illusions. It has pleasing graphics and nice music. Check out the soundtrack on YouTube if you don’t believe me.
Price: $16.69 Android/ $16 Apple/ $40 Nintendo 3DS
I felt I needed to include the newest Layton game. This is all about Professor Layton’s daughter who solving puzzles with her talking dog. This game is different from it’s predecessors because it is broken up into 12 separate cases instead one big one with chapters.
3. Card Thief
Price: Free Android/ $2 Apple
I’ve almost downloaded this game so many times. That’s because it’s free and always at the top of my recommended game list in the Android store. Card Thief is a card game that combines with the dungeon crawl. You lurk around in the shadows stealing and using cards. Sounds pretty fun!
4. Prison Architect
Genre: Construction/Management Simulation
Price: $20 Computer/ $30 PS4, XONE, Xbox 360/ Free Android, iOS
Oh man, I remember playing this on a computer when it came out on early access years ago. I’m excited to see it’s been officially released for a whole mess of platforms. Just this year it came out for phones. This game is all about building and running a 2D prison. It’s a satisfying building game.
Genre: Graphic Adventure
Price: $20 Computer, XONE, PS4/ $5 Apple, Android
This game just keeps popping back up for me on this blog! It was featured as a free game not too long ago and is actually on sale right now on Steam and the Microsoft store for Xbox until Halloween ends. It’s 75% off, costing $5 currently. This game is all about an island of ghosts that needs to be put to rest. Makes sense it’s on a Halloween sale.
6. Battle of Polytopia
Price: Free Apple, Android
I’m quite befuddled why I keep seeing this listed as one of the best games of 2017 since it appears to have come out for mobile devices in 2016. Whatever, I’m going with it because this game sounds amazing. This is for fans of Civilization games (*raises hand*). For real I’m already sold, free and like a Civilization game–I couldn’t ask for more.
7. Fire Emblem Heroes
Genre: Tactical Role-Playing Game
Price: Free Apple, Android
Had to add Fire Emblem to the list! You create a team of heroes to progress through the game’s story. It’s a spin-off of the Fire Emblem series and has in-app purchases. To be honest, I’d rather pay a one time fee than be faced with in-app purchases but oh well. In-app purchases are what is in so I’ll have to get over it.
8. Riptide GP: Renegade
Price: $3 Android, Apple/ $10 Xbox, Computer, PlayStation
A sweet racer involving “hydro jets,” which are these crazy looking jet ski, motorcycle hybrid. Accomplish water stunts and unlock characters and vehicles. It’s face-paced and looks pretty fun.
