Lilo's Lair #22: Overwatch and Hearthstone Animated Shorts. Presented by Saljack Enterprises. Gaming. Animation. Media. Entertainment. Woman Owned.

The long anticipated new animated short for Overwatch finally came out last week. It is amazing. The quality is through the roof and looks like a Pixar film.  If you are unaware what Overwatch is, it is a first-person shooter that came out last year for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It is one of the most popular games for eSports, and many colleges compete in Overwatch. The battles are team based, with two teams of six competing against one another.

This is a viral game that won Game of the Year in 2016. However, even if you don’t play Overwatch, this is an excellent animated short you can enjoy that tells some of the backgrounds to the game’s story line. It might help to know a little bit about the game, but it isn’t necessary.

This short is about Mei and the importance of science for the Overwatch team, not just battle. It also shows her development from scientist to an ice shooting hero in the game. Here it is:

That was better than the new Alien movie–haha. Really, it is such a well made short with great animation and a gripping story line that ranged from cute to tragic.

Blizzard (the company who released Overwatch) is no newbie to animated shorts. They are actually pretty great at it. If this is the first Overwatch short you have watched and you want more, then you are in luck. There are actually seven animated shorts for Overwatch (including this new one). The other videos are as follows:

  1. RecallThis animated short tells the story of Winston. He is a gorilla who has been genetically modified. He is a scientist, and this short shows an attack happening to his laboratory while he decides if he should recall the Overwatch agents. This takes place in Watchpoint: Gibraltar.

  2. Alive: This video is about Widowmaker, an agent of Talon (a terrorist organization out to destroy Overwatch). She is a deadly assassin without emotion. This story shows her in King’s Row on a job.

  3. Dragons: Dragons is about Hanzo, who is heir to the Shimada clan (a powerful criminal family of ninjas). In this short Hanzo returns to his family home in Hanamura, to face his past mistakes and seek forgiveness.

  4. HeroHero is about Soldier: 76 on a mission in Dorado to check out the Los Muertos gang. Things don’t go so smooth though.

  5. The Last Bastion: This short is about the transforming robot called Bastion. After laying asleep in the forest for many years, it randomly reactivates. It’s a curious machine that begins exploring its surroundings.

  6. InfiltrationTalon agents Reaper, Widowmaker, and Sombra, have to improvise the assassination of a high priority target when things don’t go as planned.

Now that you know what the videos are all about you can check them all out here

Overwatch isn’t the only game that Blizzard has animated shorts for. Actually, last week not only brought the newest Overwatch short but also a Hearthstone animated short!

Hearthstone is another top-rated Blizzard game. It is a collectible card game that came out in 2014 for Android, iOS, Windows, and MacOS. In the game, you use your pre-made deck of cards against an opponent. Your end goal is to deplete the health of your opponent to zero before they reduce yours to zero. The game is often compared to the popular card game Magic: The Gathering.

If you are unaware Hearthstone, takes place in the world of Warcraft’s Azeroth. Warcraft is probably something you have heard of even if you aren’t too familiar with the game since a live action movie came out for it last year–titled Warcraft.

Usually, animated shorts are released by Blizzard as a way to promote a new game or new expansion to a game. Hearthstone already had released its new expansion, Knights of the Frozen Throne. Which means this short was made just to celebrate the game and give the fans something to watch. It is the very first animated short for Hearthstone. Here it is:

This short is promised as the first in a series. There will be a cast of repeating characters throughout the series. In a press release, they even told us who the characters would be. Here is the list from Game Spot:

  • Harth Stonebrew: The Tavern’s jolly dwarven proprietor is a welcoming and gracious host.
  • Ava: A curious teenage girl with an indomitable, resilient spirit and a knack for Hearthstone.
  • Malto: This kindly old mage is a source of wisdom and encouragement.
  • Sarge: Sarge is no ordinary mouse–Malto’s magical companion is the heart of the Tavern.
  • Lou: A boisterous, happy-go-lucky paladin with a positive attitude. The life of the party.
  • Fewz and Wick: These goblin brothers provide thrilling commentary for the Tavern’s most heated Hearthstone matches.
  • Velaris: This snooty blood elf’s card collection is dwarfed only by the size of his ego.
  • Roberta “Bertie” Clickfizzle: A brilliant gnome whose curiosity knows no bounds. She’s in her element when tinkering with unique deck ideas.
  • Urk: This orc loves playing aggressive decks, but watch out! He has anger issues and has even been known to flip a table or two.

I’m all over these animated shorts. Rise and Shine, the newest Overwatch short has gotten me hooked! I’m pretty excited about the Hearthstone series. It sounds like it will be continued story line for the whole collection since there is a cast of repeating characters. Hopefully, we will find out soon!

Quite impressive that there is a short movie for Overwatch now. Even games such as DOTA 2 don’t really have that many short movies. Maybe it’s time for me to try the game too.

Wow. The short animated series is awesome and I really liked the Overwatch as Mei seems to be one determined girl. The second one Hearthstone reminded me of the movie Tangled but I don’t know why. Anyways I will definitely check out these games. They are so colorful and full of energy and I hope they will be awesome fun to play too. Thanks for sharing.
