Lilo's Lair #13: Ready Player One, The New Spielberg Movie about Gaming. Presented by Saljack Enterprises. Gaming. Animation. Media. Entertainment. Woman Owned.

Everyone loves at least a couple of Spielberg films! He’s certainly made a lot of classics such as ET, Jurassic Park, The Goonies, Jaws, Schindler’s List, and Indiana Jones. There’s a lot of good ones to pick. Now he has made a movie aimed at gamers and people who love the 80s.

Three weeks ago at Comic Con, the new trailer for Spielberg’s film Ready Player One hit YouTube with a bang! It looks so amazing:

I’m squealing with delight! This movie just is just so visualizing pleasing!

Ready Player One is not a novel story, it’s actually a novel…a story that was a book, a novel’s story? Anyway, in 2011 Ready Player One by Ernest Cline was published. Despite being the writer’s debut story, there was a bidding war for it. Publishers knew it was solid gold from the start. The day after the publishing company won the book, they sold the rights to Warner Bros. Cha-ching! A fun fact about Ernest Cline is that he wrote an episode of Red vs. Blue (the web series about Master Chief from Halo). If you want to check that out, he wrote the episode titled Mr. Red vs. Mr. Blue–which is on YouTube.

The story takes place in the not too distant future of 2044, where socioeconomic issues are fiercely prevalent–a result from a combination of things, including global warming and an energy crisis. The hero of the story is Wade Watts, and just like most people, he escapes the uncomfortable reality of their time through a virtual reality world called Oasis. I LOVE virtual reality shows and movies. I slobbered over Sword Art Online through all twenty-five episodes. I have to shyly admit something though…I never watched Sword Art Online 2GAH! Shame on me, right?

Back to Ready Player One. In the story the creator of the MMO/virtual society Oasis died, it was announced that within the game he had left an Easter egg. This isn’t an average Easter egg because the first person to find it gets the creator’s entire fortune. Our hero Wade is one of the many people that spends his time looking for this Easter egg.

The book was a bestseller and even inspired companies like Oculus VR. Oculus often invites the writer of Ready Player One to come sign books and hardware, and they even recommend the book to new employees. The writer, Cline, even had his own Easter egg hunt written into the book. At the final leg of his Easter egg hunt, Craig Queen won and was gifted a DeLorean (the time traveling car from Back to the Future)!

This story has so much gaming nostalgia. In the book, the creator of Oasis was a total 1980s nerd. The movie looks like it goes the extra mile for gaming and movie nostalgia. In the trailer, you can see the Iron Giant, a ninja turtle, Freddy Krueger, a DeLorean, and more. This movie does not hold back for plugging in pop culture. The trailer even manages to show a motorcycle from Akira–the 1988 cyber punk dystopian anime that was one of the most popular anime movies in the United States, ever.

Another great thing about this movie is it has Simon Pegg, the actor who also plays in Shaun on the Dead and as Scotty in the new Star Trek series. Some other familiar faces might be T.J. Miller (from Deadpool), Ben Mendelson (from the Netflix original Bloodline), and Mark Rylance (the voice of the BFG and also in Dunkirk). Lastly, the main female lead is Olivia Cook, who played in Bates Motel as Emma Decody–the quirky girl with cystic fibrosis who had a crush on Norman Bates.

One thing I love about this story is Wade Watts. Just a regular guy, alienated from others who’s risen to fame and becomes the hero. It makes it so much easier to let my head fill with air and imagine myself as some lone ranger who through luck, and obsession, becomes some famous Harry Potter like hero. Don’t get me wrong; I love seeing Bruce Willis‘ shaved head bob as he takes out a crew of evil doers. However, that reality has never felt attainable to me because I’m just a regular person, sitting in front of my computer most days.

Stephen Spielberg inserts so many little Easter eggs just in the trailer. For instance, there is a QR code on a car that when scanned leads to the site jointhequest.io. If you check out the website and inspect the code for the page, it offers details about when the movie releases and the actors in it. Super cool! Keep your eyes peeled for any extra clues, or just wait until other’s find it and point it out–haha.

Ready Player One will be released March 30, 2018–a little over seven months of waiting for us. If you can’t wait that long, then read the book! Though, it seems some people were less than thrilled about the book. Those people claim it’s annoying and over the top with nostalgia. I haven’t read the book, so that opinion (even if from a small population) makes me concerned it might make me less excited about the movie. Though I doubt it could, not much can keep me from a film about Virtual Reality.
