Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of attending Comicpalooza, in Houston, Texas on behalf of Saljack Enterprises. Well, let me tell you guys…
It was AWESOME!
I love that… it’s one of the only places that you can go and be accepted for whoever you are. I love the diversity of the crowd… it’s like a sea of creativity brought together by the love of gaming, cosplay, comic books and superheroes. I was so in my element for sure! When we finally showed up, after somehow getting lost on the way.. it was easy to figure out where to go. I knew just follow the ones in costume.. we just kinda let them lead the way… And man… most of those costumes were absolutely amazing! So many very talented people were there in their ornately detailed, perfectly made outfits… That alone was spectacular to watch.Comicpalooza is a festival of sorts that allows you not only to dress up in your finest cosplay outfits but, you can also find a ton of vendors with booths selling their one of a kind handmade items. Right away I found a booth with fox ears… I’ve been wanting a pair for so long now and this is the best place to find them. No doubt about it… so I scored my pair right away! They are hand made and the price was fantastic, a bargain I just could not pass up. In fact, I made a video blog of my visit to Comicpalooza, and I’m actually wearing them throughout the video, so be sure to check it out!!Not only can your score great merchandise, comic books, art, swords and other weapons, action figures, and so much more but, you can actually meet the stars that play your favorite characters and, I did just that!!
Now, it is true that you are strongly urged to buy autographs and pay for pics… I mean, I get it but why is it so expensive? Let’s face it, these stars have plenty of money, don’t ya think? Okay… getting off that subject… I did meet some of my favorites anyway without paying a dime. You can totally tell which ones are there for the money and which ones are there for the fans. Let me start with the one and only Finn Jones, the star of Iron Fist!! He was an absolute gentleman! He did not care one bit if we were buying an autograph… he high-fived us like we were long lost, friends. He truly is a kind-hearted, genuine person and deserves every bit of his success… it couldn’t have happened to a nicer person. He clearly loves what he does and loves his fans. I actually wrote a blog about the Iron Fist series recently and I told him about it. He seemed very interested and thankful for giving the show even more exposure. He even mentioned, he would be looking up Saljack to see my article. How cool is that!!??Another highlight for me was meeting Herschel from TWD!!! Yes, it was so nice to see him with his head connected to his body! I mean, I know it’s a show and I knew he was okay but… still. You guys that love TWD, remember that scene and how sad it was! I watched a series with him on Netflix called the “OA.” If you haven’t watched it, you need too. It starts off a little crazy but, the story is one that is rarely told. It’s worth the watch! Anyway, meeting Scott Wilson. AKA: Herschel was a dream come true. I even cried a little!! Again, he was the most humble, and open person, it was an experience I will never forget! He hugged us right away.
Yes!! I got hugs!! I probably hugged him like
I probably hugged him like 3 times and he just chatted with us for a while. Just amazing!!
But, honestly, and I hope I’m not being too honest and maybe I shouldn’t name names but… I was so very excited to see this certain member of Sons Of Anarchy… like… it was all I talked about on the way there and all I can say is… it was quite the letdown. It was the only booth that told me they usually don’t let people meet him unless they pay for something and when I finally did talk to him, he acted like I was just wasting his time, almost not even taking the time to look away from his phone. In fact, it was awkward. And no… it wasn’t Jax… or should I say, Charlie Hunnam. I know he’s a cool dude and would never have treated a fan like that. Maybe he will be there next year… finger’s crossed!!Believe it or not, the food was amazing. I got nachos that went on for days. Silly, maybe but, I was so surprised! You know when you go to these places, they usually make you pay out the booty for food and its very small portions. I actually got more than my money’s worth for once! But, they had BBQ… healthy foods… burgers & fries, pizza… pretty much anything you could possibly want and not to mention Comicpalooza was at the George R. Brown Convention Center this year and the Convention Center has a ton of great restaurants located directly inside. You can’t beat that!
I feel like I have so much more to say about my experience but… I’m running out of time! UGH!! I feel like I could write a book about it so.. I have to cut it off somewhere so, I guess this spot is as good as any. I know I have a lot of comic book lovers and comic convention goers out there so… Let me know some of your experiences!!And… don’t forget to watch my video blog (Comicpalooza video to be released in the next week or so) and experience it all right along with me! Special thanks to you Stacey, for helping me record the journey and to Jordan for enjoying the experience with me. Couldn’t have done it all without you two!
