Here we go! Starting today we continue the Project-X storyline with the first part of book 3. I hope you enjoy!
Eight men and women sat around a large oval boardroom table in an abandoned government facility on Plum Island just off the coast of Long Island. The island steeped in mystery had been under government control from 1899, and it had been home to a rogue ex-government faction since 2020.
Billionaire philanthropist Warren Goldstein bought Plum Island as soon as he became aware that the government was auctioning it off in an effort to set off some of its deficit in 2018 and immediately began assembling a group of people he hoped would be able to help him save the world.
Since the superheroes had vanished, there had been no one to stem the rising tide of crime in New York. Buildings burned, people died, and anarchy reigned supreme. The Government had lost its money reserves and refused to declare martial law. Some believed that they declined to do it based on politics seeing as it was an election year but others knew the truth, they just could not afford to mobilize the troops. They were broke. The villains ran amok, unchecked and unafraid.
Warren knew that if New York fell so too would the rest of the United States, and so did the other seven people around the table. They became known as The Initiative, and they had two mandates: Find the missing hybrids and assemble a team of highly skilled operatives to quell the rising mayhem.
A portion of the first mandate had already been accomplished. Dylan and his mother had safely made it to the island and were under The Initiative’s protection. Rumors persisted that there were more superhero offspring hybrids scattered throughout the world and they continued to look. The hybrids in the hands of the villains would spell disaster for New York. The notion of a child with such devastating power and a complete lack of morality was a possibility that no one at The Initiative wanted to have to face.
“I want to thank you all for coming, and I am sure that when this is all over your country will thank you as well,” Warren said as he looked around the table. “You have been asked to come because you are the brightest minds in your fields and believe that drastic measures must be taken to protect the hybrids and take back our country. Some of you may already know each other; some may not. I suggest that we begin with the requisite introductions. I am Warren Goldstein, and I will be funding your endeavors.”
The man on his right stood up.
“I am retired, General Buck Fisher. My job will be to provide strategic solutions.”
One by one the people around the table introduced themselves.
“My name is Lara Crawford. Ex- CIA here to handle intelligence.”
“Captain Jeff Gray, I am a former Navy Seal and hand to hand combat specialist.”
“Peter Fischer, CEO of Landau Corporation. We are the largest supplier of military weaponry in the world.”
“My name is Dr. Sheila Harper. I am a scientist and engineer, here to make good weapons better” she said as she smiled at Mr. Fischer next to her.
“Gunner Jason Smith. I am here to provide weapons training to the recruits.”
“Navida Patel, Ph.D. I am here to make sure that everyone remains healthy mentally and physically.
Warren thanked everyone and motioned to the back of the room where a man in black leather was just walking in and removing his motorcycle helmet.
“This is Mr. Smith; I am sure that you have all seen him from time to time. He is our go-to man for surveillance, recruitment, and logistics.” Warren said with a wry smile.
“I apologize for being late,” said Mr. Smith. “I have concluded my fact finding and have settled on eight recruits.”
Warren looked at him and motioned towards the screens on the wall behind his head. “Well don’t wait for an invitation. Put up their intel and let’s have a look. We all need to be up to speed on who is going to be handling the nuts and bolts of this operation. Besides, we will be welcoming them to our little adventure tomorrow.”
With that, Mr. Smith plugged his laptop in and the first of the eight recruits popped up on the screen.
