Today we continue the main story-line starting with the part 5 of book 2. I hope you enjoy it!
Nathan and Zulinda had met in college. As he was gaining fame and notoriety as one of the brightest minds in advanced DNA research, she was flunking out of med school. Although their futures seemed destined to take different paths, they felt an uncontrollable attraction to each other. Something deep within their beings that told them to stay close, very close, and never let go.
When Nathan’s world came crashing down at MIT, Zulinda saw him through his grief, madness and eventually his anger. The man who had turned him in wound up dead, struck by a Mercedes that fled the scene. Later as he lay in the morgue, his body was mutilated and reassembled to reflect what his killer thought of him, a pig. The killer had used one of his knee caps to fashion the appropriate nose.
After draining the remaining money left in his various grant accounts, Nathan “enlisted” the help of one of the brightest minds in computer programming at MIT to hack into and drain the institute’s massive endowment fun. With Zulinda at his side, he hopped into his Mercedes and fled to New York.
He knew he had to continue his work no matter what the cost, he was so close. Perfection was just around the corner, and the human race would once again hold his name in the highest regard and recognize his genius. For now, he needed to stay in the shadows to be allowed to work in peace…and remain free.
Zulinda just wanted to be at Nathan’s side, protect him, help him, she didn’t care what that meant. She also wanted to feed her twisted desires, the quest for perfection, it seems, was one of the cornerstones of their attraction. For years she would find suitable test subjects for him and for years she would watch them die. She always disposed of the bodies afterward; he was so busy with his work. He barely noticed how long it took for her to do it.
Year after year and body after body she honed her sickening skills in secret. Nathan never asked questions of her, and she never asked questions of him. It was the perfect marriage. One that kept their secrets from those around them.
They lived in an affluent suburb as Nathan and Zulinda. There was no white picket fence, but the American Dream was alive and well in their neighborhood. They regularly attended weekend barbecues at their neighbor’s home’s, lit fireworks on the 4th of July, decorated their stately plantation style home for the holidays and were known as good friends.
They got up every morning like everyone else and drove to work.
Work for Nathan meant going to his secret laboratory in a massive warehouse that he owed in the old abandoned shipyards. There he would spend the day testing out his theories on the latest specimen that Zulinda had acquired for him. He was so close. He just needed the right combination of specific human markers to combine with the DNA strand he had tweaked from a test rabbit from his days at MIT. He had chosen a rabbit based on two criteria; one that it was one of the only animals that MIT allowed him to work with and the other because of a rabbit’s agility, speed and hunting prowess.
Zulinda worked at Brooklyn General Hospital as a patient support worker. Her lack of a medical degree prevented her from doing anything else, but she needed access to both the supplies and the patients to further her and Nathan’s work. She always had found it ironic that she spent the day comforting those who were on death’s doorstep knowing what she might do to them after they died.
At the end of every day, they returned home and played their part as upstanding members of society all the while knowing that the very society that they pretended to embrace would soon change forever. A perfect new society designed and ruled over by the Professor and Dr. Zu was just around the corner, and no one knew a thing.
