Jonni, the student of Kalaripayattu

Today  we present you the background story of Jonni, the Student of Kalaripayattu:

It’s not every day that an academic genius also happens to practice one of the most ancient forms of martial arts in history. Meet Jonni: Harvard Law School student with perfect grades and nearly perfect Kalaripayattu technique. Despite the drastic time commitment required for his success in law, Jonni vigorously trains on a daily basis. In fact, he couldn’t persevere through the endless demands of his course load without the mental clarity fighting provides him. Few people have the discipline necessary to master both law and Kalaripayattu simultaneously. But then again, few possess the mental and physical capacity that Jonni does.

Before attending Harvard, Jonni was just another high school student with dreams of moving away from overbearing parents and starting the next chapter in life. He was born into a strict, religious family with little toleration for anything other than church and study. While the academic aspect of his rearing seemed to stick, the spiritual fact didn’t. It’s not that Jonni had a problem with faith or congregated worship; he was pretty neutral when it came to that sort of thing. He simply couldn’t deal with his family’s inability to accept his passion for martial arts alongside their religious lifestyle. Jonni refused to cast away his one passion in life just to please his family. Nobody – not even God – was going to make him do that.

Unfortunately, Jonni’s brainpower and athleticism come at a price. Though he excels in the classroom and at the gym, he undeniably struggles in the social skills department. He can only maintain conversations if they relate to law or martial arts and just can’t seem to talk to his childhood crush without being unbearably awkward. He’s working on it, though.
